Sammy McIlroy is backing the Scot to be a real leader for the Red Devils
It's not been a good couple of seasons for Manchester United. They failed to qualify for this year's Champions League and are off the pace in the league this season, finding themselves 6th in the table, 22 points off top spot.
But every cloud has a silver a lining - and for United, that silver lining has been young, lively, and Scottish. Many were sceptical when Jose Mourinho insisted on picking a little known Scottish youth team product, but Scott McTominay has proved the doubters wrong.
The central midfielder has become a key part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's youthful side, and is a real leader in the middle of the park. Speaking to Love Sport Radio, former Manchester United star Sammy McIlroy said McTominay is such a strong character that he could see the Scot becoming Manchester United manager one day.
"McTominay has been absolutely unbelievable. When he first came in I was thinking maybe he could be a squad player, maybe we'd need him in certain games, but the boy has taken it by the scruff of the neck and been our best midfield player this season".
"He was magnificent against Spurs the other day. He battles, he works, he's box to box and he's tough in the challenge. He's been superb".
"He could maybe be club captain in the future. I think Maguire will be the next captain, but I think midfield players make good captains because they're involved with everything".
"McTominay is a Scottish international now, he's growing in confidence and maybe down the line he could be an ideal choice".
