Former Leicester star says Maddison can go all the way

But Matt Piper says the England prodigy has to operate as a number ten

Leicester City star James Maddison has withdrawn from the England squad for the Euro 2022 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria with illness.

He has failed to cement his place in Gareth Southgate's first choice eleven so far, and he might worry that his illness leaves the door open for the likes of Ross Barkley to steal his place in the side.

But speaking to Love Sport Radio, former Foxes star Matt Piper said he has absolutely no worries about Maddison's credentials on the biggest stage

"I don't think he's at risk of dropping down the international pecking order. His form this season has been that good. He's just got so much quality, it's surely enough for Gareth. He shouldn't have concerns on that front".

However, Piper said that he's only at his best when allowed to operate in his best position.

"Maddison has been Leicester's main man this season. He's at his best as a number ten. He's been played out on the left this season, but that isn't how to use him. He lacks that speed out wide, and it makes him a bit predictable as a winger".

And the former Leicester man was backing Maddison to go all the way.

"But he's two footed, he's incredibly creative, and he's super talented. People ask whether he's arrogant, but I think it's just ultimate confidence in his ability, and he makes things happen".

"He's got a big future ahead of him, Maddison. He can become a top top player".
