Could he hit the big time at Old Trafford?
Manchester United centre back Victor Lindelöf can become a world class defender, says former United striker Daniel Nardiello.
The Swedish international has often failed to live up to his billing since a big money move from Benfica in 2017. But Nardiello reckons there’s still time for Lindelöf to reach the very highest level: “I think Lindelöf is going to be a top world class centre half, I really do”.
The former frontman was under no illusions about the potential that Lindelöf possesses.
“Yeah, he had a rocky start, he was brought into a huge club―but it’s a hard thing to do at any level, particularly at such a young age. But I do think he’s got all the attributes to be a top centre half worldwide, so I think he’s going to be the number one centre half”.
Manchester United would certainly welcome more consistency from Lindelöf, but even then there would be question marks about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s back line.
Many United fans aren’t convinced by the qualities of Eric Bailly, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in the heart of defence. And despite the £55m arrival of young right back Aaron Wan Bissaka from Crystal Palace, many believe the club need further additions at the back.
When questioned about the club’s potential transfer business, Nardiello said they’ve found just the man: “I think they’ll add quality to the team. Especially [Harry] Maguire. I think he’s the one they needed”.
“Him alongside Lindelöf would be a great partnership. I think he’d bring the ball out from the back, get them playing out from the back. Even though it’s a hefty fee, I think United have got to bite the bullet, pay the fee and get him in”.
